| Boosting Wi-Fi With MIMO and 802.11n | | 85, 09/27/04 | | Most wireless network managers know that the speeds claimed by Wi-Fi hardware have little relation to actual throughput. Even when there's no radio interference and a network can give its entire capacity to one user, IEEE 802.11b never delivers more than half its official 11Mbit/sec data rate. The newer 802.11a and 802.11g are a little faster, but not much. They have to be within a few meters of an access point (AP) to get anywhere near the touted 54Mbit/sec data rate, which rapidly degrades as the clients move farther away.
